All the icons you can find in IconicOs are made for you to customize the appereance of folders and documents icons of your operative system, that is why we are called the way we are. We want you to use your own icons in your computer, and we give it to you. Customization let us give our personal touch to our own products. We offer this to you, the tools for you to let your computer look just like you want it to.
On Windows you must select the folder or document you want to customize. Then, right click and go to Properties > Customize > Change Icon, press "Browse" to find the location of the icon you wan to apply. Next press "Ok". Afterwards you can press "Apply" if you want to see immediately how does the icon look like on your folder or your document, and then "Ok".
On Mac OS X the steps are quite easy. Even though the explanation seem to be long, you will see that it is very simple and fast when you try it. In Finder, go to the icon you wan to apply, then just click over it to select the icon file. Press Command+C keys or go to Edit > Copy. Then go to the folder or document you want to customize. Right click (or Control+click) over it and select "Get Info". Then will appear a window with the information of the file. At the left-top appear the default icon. Click over it for setting it as a selection (you can see when it is selected when its borders turns some kind of light blue) and press Command+V or Edit > Paste. Your custom icon should appear instead of the default one. If you want to return to the default icon select the icon on the left-top an then press Command+X or the Delete key.
Default document icons on your operative sysem communicate to us the kind of file they are and also the application they are opened with, so if you want to customize documents icons, we recommend to do it just for those files who have a special relevance. If you do it on all your documents, you are at risk of forgetting what application open each file. For example, on your computer a PNG file could be opened with Fireworks and a JPG with Photoshop, even though they are both image files, not necessarily are opened with the same application, and if they have both the same custom document icon you will not notice the difference unless you go to the file details wich means a lack of usability because it brings an extra effort specially for those users who are not used to look at those details. So that is why we recommend to customize document icons only on those files who you will remember what are about.
